There are some real gems in these archives and all credit to the authors.
I think the times that produced both the authors and the freeware are largely gone now and the optimism about the internet and it's future has been replaced by a resigned acceptance of the surveillance net.
A bit disappointing really, but it is what it is, so work around it.
At least you can relive some of the optimism of 25 years ago by downloading some of these archives and getting a sense of what drove many of the authors of small freeware to contribute to the internet community.
