Embedded VHDs - w98 Inside
w2000 VM, Inside XP VM
This is a VirtualBox VHD with a Windows 98 VM running inside a Windows 2000 VM running inside a Windows XP VM.
The VHD size is only 2.5GB and this has been zipped down to 724mb for easier downloading.
The Windows XP VM was created with VirtualBox 6.1.26 but the Windows XP VM inside was created with VirtualBox (Portable) 4.1.20 as this version is more XP friendly.
The version of VirtualBox installed in Windows 2000 is v1.4.0 from InnoTek (from the pre Sun and Oracle days) as support for Windows 2000 ended with v1.5.x
I did include a DOS-Windows 3.1 install alongside w98, but VirtualBox 1.4.0 mouse integration is r/s - it grabs both the mouse and keyboard input and won't release them so the only way to get out of the w3.1 or DOS VM is to kill Windows 2000, which isn't a good look - so I removed DOS-W31.
I've installed the Vbemp display driver in Windows 98 and Windows 2000.
Total RAM allocated to XP and shared (in decreasing amounts) with 2000+98 is 960MB and the total VHD size is 10GB, although only 2.5GB is used.
Sound is OK in XP and 2000, but there's no sound driver for w98 in VirtualBox 1.4.0.
This is a pretty small install and will run on a resource light system like XP with no problems.
You could easily wrap this in a lite VM install of Windows 7 (try eXPerience's w7 lite) as the VHD is only a small.
I've also uploaded a zip with all the VirtualBox 1.x.x versions that I have as the early InnoTek versions are getting harder to find now - up to 1.5.x is 2K+XP and from 1.6.x is XP+Vista.
