GAZE v1.0Graphical User Interface for MS-DOS |
This is GAZE v1.0 by J. Schipperheijn from 1994, a very nicely done DOS GUI in only 384KB. The icons may be rather 1990's but don't be put off - this one has some very practical features. It has a top menu bar with drop down menus similar to Windows 3.1 wth a full range of options. There's a group of icons on the left for modifying the program group and program entries, which are shown in a 2 pane layout in the centre of the page. The icons along the lower edge of the screen are quick launch program icons, and the programs associated with the icons can be modified. The dialog boxes are nicely done and it's very easy to use them to add or modify a program group or program. There's no file manager included but the add/modify dialog boxes make it un-necessary for adding programs. There's also built in Help - and a context sensitive Help that can be displayed for the function being performed by pressing F1 - rather a professional touch. The configuration options are quite adequate and rather more than most other DOS GUIs I've tried. There's no option to change screen resolution, but . . . 1994. A very nicely done GUI with some unexpected professional touches and all in 384KB. I did find one issue and I'm not sure whether it's a GAZE issue or a VirtualBox display issue. Every time I ran GAZE the display had some black horizontal lines across the screen and these could only be removed by moving the mouse pointer over the black area - when this was done the GUI display replaced the black area. The same thing would happen whenever a program was run and the GUI displayed again. I tried tweaking VirtualBox RAM and video options but the problem persisted. A bit of a shame if this is an application fault, as in all other respects it's very nicely done. Well worth a download to try out. At C: enter "GAZE" to load the GUI. As well as the VHD I've also included a zip file with the install files. The VHD was created using VirtualBox 6.1.26 with DOS 6.22 and Cute Mouse installed. < Click here to download the VHD > < Click here to download the install files as a .zip > |
