MOS 98 & MOS RemasteredGraphical User Interface for MS-DOS |
This is two versions of MOS - MOS 98 and MOS Remastered by Murray Parkinson, c2005-2015. These are both desktop GUIs and are both quite basic, but usable. The date on MOS 98 is a little unclear - it's titled MOS 98 suggesting a 1998 date, but most of the install files are dated 2005. MOS Remastered has install files dated 2015. The remastered version is more polished with a better GUI appearance and includes a text viewer, sticky notes and CD player. The 98 version is not as polished, but does include a CD player as well as a text viewer, a RAM usage display, volume control and some disk functions - I couldn't tell whether either CD player works as my VHD has no DOS sound drivers installed. MOS 98 also also has an option to load what I assume is the w3.1 calculator. Neither has a file manager, although there is a drive viewer in MOS 98 that didn't work well for the C drive, as it seemed to overlay all directory entries on top of one another. Both have very basic configuration options - pretty much the colour only for MOS 98 and colour and desktop image for MOS remastered. Both will run DOS programs just fine and MOS 98 can create shortcuts for these on the start menu programs list, and MOS remastered can create program shortcuts on the desktop. Both have a Run option. While they're both very simple, both worked fine for me with no crashes, so credit where it's due. Would I use either as a daily driver ? Probably not, as there are more functional DOS GUIs around. The single VHD I've uploaded has both versions. There's no autostart - to run MOS 98 enter "MOS-98" at the C: prompt and to run MOS Remastered enter "MOS-RM" at the C: prompt. As well as the VHD I've included a .zip with the install files and all the screencaps. The VHD was created using VirtualBox 6.1.26 and the DOS version installed is 6.22. < Click here to download the VHD > < Click here to download the install files as a .zip > |
